The train catches the last of the golden light as it curves toward the coast, its windows glowing amber against a sky that shifts from deep blue overhead to brilliant orange at the horizon. In the distance, the silhouette of Coney Island comes into view: the Wonder Wheel, the roller coaster, the whole dreamlike machinery of a summer afternoon winding down. It is the kind of view that makes the city feel endless and achingly beautiful.

Eric Drooker created this cover for The New Yorker's September 5, 2011 issue. Published the same week Hurricane Irene struck New York City, with the subway system shut down and Coney Island under evacuation orders, the cover took on an uncanny resonance. It became an accidental tribute to the city's spirit: a celebration of the line coming back to life just days later.

A perfect gift for New Yorkers, transit enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever watched the city pass by from an elevated platform and felt lucky to be there.
